Storage tank inspection

Storage tank inspection

A common failure mechanism is leakage through the floor and damage to the tank foundations, leading to instability that can result in catastrophic failure. The most common technology used to inspect floor plates for corrosion is magnetic flux leakage (MFL), owing to its sensitivity to volumetric changes. MFL uses a strong magnet to induce a magnetic field in the floor plate. When it encounters corrosion of a certain size, the magnetic field “leaks”. The greater the volumetric loss of material, the greater the magnetic flux leakage.

Magnetic flux leakage is detected by a combination of several types of sensor, but MFL technology cannot tell whether defects are on the top or the bottom of the plates. For this reason we combine MFL with STARS technology, which allows the floors of storage tanks to be mapped completely and distinguishes between top-side and bottom-side defects. It is the most advanced magnetic flux leakage floor scanner on the market, complemented by an inspection tool ideal for storage tanks of 10 metres in diameter or less, floor plates and heating coils in situ. FloormapX significantly reduces the time needed to inspect tank floors while producing detailed and accurate reports.
